Introduction to diatomaceous earth
Diatomaceous earth is a kind of biological sediment mainly composed of the remains of the single-celled aquatic plant "diatom". It is a non-renewable resource. The main composition is SiO2, and the quality of diatomite is determined by the level of amorphous SiO2 content.
The mineral composition of diatomite is mainly opal and its variants, followed by clay minerals-hydromica, kaolinite and mineral detritus. Mineral detritus includes quartz, feldspar, biotite and organic matter. Organic content from trace to more than 30%.
The color of diatomaceous earth is white, off-white, gray and light taupe to wait, have delicate, loose, qualitative light, porous, water absorption and permeability strong material property.
Diatoms in diatomaceous earth come in many different shapes, such as disc, needle, tube, plume, etc. The loose density is 0.3-0.5g/cm3, the Mohs hardness is 1-1.5 (the diatom bone particles are 4.5-5mm), the porosity is 80-90%, and it can absorb 1.5-4 times of its weight of water. It is a poor conductor of heat, electricity and sound. The melting point is 1650-1750°C, and the chemical stability is high. Insoluble in any strong acid, but soluble in strong alkali solutions.
The silica of diatomite is mostly amorphous, and the soluble silicate content of alkali is 50~80%. The amorphous SiO2 becomes crystalline when heated to 800~1000°C, and the soluble silicic acid in the base can be reduced to 20~30%.
The application of diatomite in the industry, its initial processing process is inseparable from the use of grinding machine, in addition, diatomite coating additive products, with large porosity, strong absorption, chemical stability, wear resistance, heat resistance and other characteristics, can provide excellent surface properties, compatibity, thickening and adhesion improvement for coatings. Now people are reusing the diatomaceous earth to make more environmentally friendly new products.
Function: Diatomaceous earth is porous, low density, large surface area, strong adsorption, good suspension performance, stable properties, etc. The conductivity of sound, heat and electricity is very poor, non-toxic and tasteless.
